Years ago, a strange discovery was made deep within the vast desert, one we still understand almost nothing about.
We excavated for years beneath the brutal heat, losing what felt like hundreds of brave souls to exhaustion and the unstable desert ground that concealed immense lava tunnels below. Yet despite everything, we uncovered little more than fragments of partially preserved skeletons… and a single skull.
But the discovery changed everything.
It gave truth to the ancient whispers, tales of a forgotten race that once inhabited a great city buried beneath the sands. A people said to have raised the colossal monuments with their own bare hands, monuments that later kings falsely claimed as their own for thousands of years and building upon with them with inferior technique and materials, paling in comparison.
The stories we once dismissed as myth suddenly carried far more weight than any of us had ever imagined. Future excavations, however, must go deeper than the desert itself. The immense lava tunnels beneath the sands remain almost entirely unexplored, and many now believe whatever answers still exist were never buried above the ground at all… but hidden beneath it.
Inspired by my fascination of ancient stories and cultures and the secrets they kept. Whilst designing these I had in mind a civilisation thousands of years in the future recreating what they thought to believe these ancient humans might have looked like, an idea built from physical artwork and stories left behind from what to them, was deeply ancient cultures.
These masks are sculpted in Zbrush, printed, sanded and hand painted then mounted on a decorated wooden block protected with danish oil. The mask is varnished to last and made to be hung high as if to look down.
